The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has led a team comprising staff of the Ministry of Finance, its agencies, and security officers in a clean-up exercise at Alajo on Friday, July 10, 2026, in response to President John Dramani Mahama's directive for mandatory nationwide cleaning exercises across flood-affected regions.
The exercise, announced by the Office of the President, formed part of Government's flood response measures aimed at restoring sanitation in the seven flood-affected regions and mitigating the risk of future flooding.
Several high-profile government officials and traditional leaders joined the Ministry to participate in the exercise, including the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama; the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey; the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno; the Ga Mantse, Dr. Kelvin Nii Tackie Abia; and the Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Defense, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi.
Addressing participants, President John Dramani Mahama expressed his appreciation to Ghanaians for turning out in their numbers to take part in the exercise. He also commended the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, for releasing GH¢150 million from the Contingency Fund to support Government’s Emergency Flood Relief and Mitigation programme.
The President urged all citizens to remain committed to maintaining a clean environment and not relent after the rains subside. He called for an attitudinal change towards indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and announced the Government’s plan to organise similar nationwide cleaning exercises every month.
"Two days are not enough to finish this work, but we are going to institutionalize it so that at least one day in every month, all of us will come out and clean our surroundings," he said.
President Mahama further assured Ghanaians that the Ghana Armed Forces would continue the clean-up exercise after the designated two-day period. He added that the initiative reflected Ghana's long-standing communal values and expressed confidence that it would yield lasting results.
Beyond the immediate clean-up efforts, the exercise emphasizes the need for sustained action, improved sanitation habits, and continued collaboration to keep communities clean and reduce the risk of future flooding.
