New BOG Governor Sworn-in
President John Evans Atta Mills, has sworn-into office, Mr. Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, an economist and a former Deputy Minister for Finance and Economic Planning (MoFEP), as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana yesterday at the Castle, Osu.
He swore the Oath of Allegiance, Official Oath, and the Oath of Secrecy administered by President Mills, and then signed the oath book.
President Mills, congratulating the new governor, said Mr. Amissah-Arthur is capable of handling affairs at the central bank. The President recalled when he had the privilege of working with him when the new governor was a deputy minister at the finance ministry for eight and half years whiles he was the commissioner of the Internal Revenue Services (IRS).
The new governor, the President said, is an active member of his economic advisory team and described him as the man with the right antecedent and who is adequately prepared for the job. “I have no doubt that Ghana under his governorship, together with his team, will move in the right direction to build a better Ghana”, he added.
Mr. J. H. Martey Newman, the Chief of Staff said, he believes Mr. Amissah-Arthur can combine both monetary and fiscal policies but advised the new governor to consult the government on all occasions despite his rich experience and the autonomous nature of the central bank.
Mr. Amissah Arthur thanked the President for the honour and said he has been humbled by the trust President Mills has reposed in him and assured that he, together with his team, will work hard to be able to achieve results.
The new governor said he aims at stabilising inflation, lower the lending rate and facilitate economic growth, and he and his team is ready for the challenges that will show up.
Mr. Amissah Arthur took over from Dr. Paul Acquah, the immediate past governor who retired on September 30, 2009 after eight years in office.
