African Finance Minister of the Year by Emerging Markets.
Hon Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Finance and
Economic Planning has been voted African Finance
Minister of the Year by Emerging Markets.
He would be presented with the award at a ceremony in
Washington today.
In an interview with emerging Markets, Hon.
Baah-Wiredu pledged new reforms to develop the
country's markets, to boost the sources of financing
for domestic businesses. "But more fundamentally, I am
pushing a pension reform bill through Parliment. This
will stimulate the development of local capital
markets as well as competition in the banking sector.
Since 2001, Ghana has embarked on economic reforms
which has led to the achievement of micro economic
stability. A couple of weeks ago, Ghana was the first
post HIPC country to assess the international capital
market with the successful issue of a $750m Eurobond.
Hon. Baah-Wiredu was appointed Minister of Finance and
Economic Planning by President J A Kufuor in 2005. He
was previously the Minister of Local Government and
Rural Development and then later Minister of
Education, Youth and Sport.
