GC-Net Pays GH¢ 17 Million Dividend to Govt.

Accra, April 7, 2017 - The Ghana Community Network (GC-Net) has presented a cheque of GH¢17 million as part of government’s dividends to the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori Atta.

The Minister while commending the company stressed the need to ensure that human intervention in the collection process of taxes is limited as much as possible to reduce corruption. This, he said is where GC-Nets use of technology will be useful.

He said the role of Customs and Ports Authority cannot be underestimated, however, a lot of allegations are being made about the integrity of the workers.

He, therefore, called on GC-Net to take a critical look at their system to overhaul the gaps that compromise the system. He commended GC-Net for registering 500 tax payers adding that he looked forward to a fruitful working relationship with them.

The Executive Chairman, GC-Net, Dr. Nortey Omaboe, said GC-Net provides e-solutions to government through development and deployment of e-systems for processing trade transactions and custom clearance, for registration of businesses and for tax administrations.

He said as part of its obligation, GC-Net is committed to ensure that all areas of its operations accrue revenue to the government of Ghana.

Dr. Omaboe said the government of Ghana has 20% shares whilst GCB bank and Ghana Shippers Authority hold 15% and 5% shares respectively. Last year a cheque of GH¢35 million was presented to government as dividend.

This year, he noted, arears of dividend from April 2016 to March 2017 due government was GH¢27 million, out of which GH¢10 million has already been paid. The cheque for GH¢17 million, he explained, was the difference due for 2016 up to March, 2017.

The GC-Net Executive Chairman also presented documents on recommendations of Customs, Registrar General and the Ports.

Present at the function was a Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen, Mr. Ernest Akore, Technical Advisor, Ministry of Finance, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, Commissioner General, GRA, and George Ofori Atta, Non Tax Revenue Division, Ministry of Finance.

Also present were Alwin Hoegerle, General Manager, GC-Net, Emmanuel Darko, Deputy General Manager, GC-Net.
